The FELCOM12 is an Inmarsat-C Mobile Earth Station designed using FURUNO’s advanced technology in Inmarsat system equipment. The Inmarsat-C system provides quality two-way telex and data link between ships and other parties at sea or on land, and it also meets GMDSS carriage requirements.
The FELCOM12 offers all functions and services that Inmarsat provides: Enhanced Group Call (EGC), E-mail (X.400), distress message handling, polling, data reporting, etc. EGC messages include SafetyNET and FleetNET broadcasts from coast stations and land offices. SafetyNET offers Maritime Safety Information beyond the NAVTEX coverage for safety at sea. FleetNET offers trade information, for example, company news or market prices, to a selected group.
The distress alert is initiated on the distress alert box. The distress message including own ship’s position can be easily edited on the terminal unit or an Inmarsat-approved PC. The system can be expanded with an optional built-in GPS receiver for position reporting without operator intervention.
The basic FELCOM12 consists of a small omni-directional, cone-shaped antenna, a compact communication unit, and a 9.5″ LCD terminal unit with keyboard. GMDSS compliance can be achieved by adding a printer, a distress alert unit and a DC/AC power supply unit. These space-saving compact units allow flexible installation on the bridge together with other communication equipment in the radio console.
